Whatever the project, we at AVS are the first to come and the last to go. With our comprehensive portfolio of services for professional traffic safety, we ensure that all road users can safely pass through the construction site danger zone – and that the construction site runs as smoothly as possible.
A 293 urban highway: Roadway to be renewed by the end of 2021
For these construction measures, our team of AVS Lehrte has taken over the temporary traffic management. The digital traffic management is carried out by our team of AVS Digital.
The special feature of this project: In addition to the use of LED congestion warning systems, the construction site entrances in both directions of travel are monitored with state-of-the-art camera technology at the request of the Oldenburg highway police. This enables the police to react immediately to traffic obstructions, especially at peak times. Cameras monitor the traffic, automatically swivel into the congestion area if a traffic jam develops and focus on the danger area. By means of strategically placed data points (positions), the traffic flow is monitored and relevant speed data is transmitted to the police.
A convenient solution has been created for the police. By combining information from the congestion warning systems with the live images from the cameras and the speeds and position data measured at the positions, they receive a comprehensive traffic management center for this construction measure.
The new construction of the A 49 between Neuental and Gemünden/Felda comprises three sections, all of which are currently under construction. The new highway ensures the connection of conurbations, the reduction of capacity bottlenecks and the relief of local through roads.
In this PPP project, AVS Verkehrssicherung, Team Wetzlar, is responsible for all traffic safety measures during the construction phases until fall 2024.
Schedule
The construction project began in October 2020 with the Neuental/Bischhausen to Schwalmstadt/Treysa section and will continue until fall 2024.
Milestones
The Neuental-Bischhausen junction was opened by our team on Friday, October 29, 2021.
Over the course of the next few years, further sections will be completed. In the course of this measure, our teams are in charge of 13 further traffic safety projects on surrounding country and federal highways, the A 5, A49 and local through roads.
Facts & Figures
The 61.8 km long contract section consists of four sections:
- VKE 10 (part): AS Fritzlar-AS Neuental (19.3 km), existing section
- VKE 20: AS Neuental-AS Schwalmstadt (11.8 km), under construction by the Autobahn GmbH of the Federal Government
- VKE 30: AS Schwalmstadt-AS Stadtallendorf-Nord (13.3 km), new section
- VKE 40: AS Stadtallendorf-Nord-Ohmtal-Dreieck (17.5 km), new section
Project description
As part of the trans-European transport route network, the BAB 49 federal freeway has a European connection and regional development function and fulfils important community objectives. The gap closure of the BAB 49 between the Schwalmstadt junction and the Ohmtal triangle (BAB 5 / BAB 49) serves to reduce capacity bottlenecks and the risk of accidents on the BAB 7 and BAB 5, to relieve the downstream road network of supraregional traffic, to improve the development of the region and to connect the economic areas of Kassel and Rhine/Main.
The BAB 49 project is being implemented as a public-private partnership (PPP) under an availability model. Planning, construction, operation and maintenance as well as pro-rata financing are the responsibility of A 49 Autobahngesellschaft mbH & Co. KG - a joint venture of STRABAG Infrastrukturprojekt GmbH and Meridiam Investments SAS.
The sections VKE 30 and VKE 40 are being implemented by DEGES Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH on behalf of Autobahn GmbH. Since 2020, the construction of VKE 30 and VKE 40 has been carried out in a public-private partnership (PPP) by the PPP contractor, A 49 Autobahngesellschaft mbH & Co. KG.
After overall completion, the PPP contractor will take over operation and maintenance of the project section, which is around 62 kilometers long in total (Fritzlar to Ohmtal-Dreieck). The contract term is 30 years.
More information
In the 7.5 km long section, the road structure was completely renewed by placing a frost protection layer, the base layer of unbound mineral materials and asphalt concrete in two layers. The bearing capacity of the renewed roadway corresponds to the expected traffic intensity in the next 20 years, taking into account the predicted freight traffic and the use of agricultural machinery.
Our AVS Latvia team installed the steel guardrails, applied the permanent markings (both key activities of AVS Latvija) and installed the signs for temporary and permanent traffic guidance.
